The Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee celebrated International Women's Day by gifting 2,100 middle school girls sportswear during the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) LA's second annual Girls Empowerment Day at the Dignity Health Sports Park.

The total cost of the sportswear exceeded $100,000 (£84,000/€94,500), as the donation was a part of LA28's Gift of Sports commitment to create interest in the event.

Kara Lynn Joyce, a four-time Olympic silver medallist in swimming, spoke about her experience as an athlete during a panel for LA28 athlete fellows.

"Sharing the power of sport with these young women is such a special opportunity," said Kara Lynn Joyce.

"Sports give us so many long-term benefits we can carry with us for life, from creating community and teaching values to showing up every day and building confidence.

"These young women are just starting out in life and it’s our job to pay it forward and help empower the next generation of female athletes."

Many other Olympians joined Joyce at the event, including ice hockey player Molly Schaus, track and field Paralympian Ahkeel Whitehead, rhythmic gymnast Natalie McGiffert, rower Missy Ryan, judokas Marti Malloy and Nina Cutro-Kelly, track and field Olympian Jason Richardson and fencer Kamilla Vaksman.

Los Angeles is set to host the Olympics for the third time, having previously done so in 1932 and 1984.
