Ranked 15^th in the FIE rankings, Gallo enjoyed a sensational run from the round of 64 at the Kioene Arena in the at the Trofeo Luxardo.

He defeated Spain's Carlos Florez 15-8, Germany's Raoul Bonah 15-11 and Argentina's Pascual Maria Di Tella 15-9 to set up a quarter-final against Hungary's former world champion András Szatmári.

Gallo edged the match 15-14, and triumphed by the same scoreline in the semi-final against European champion and world number one Sandro Bazadze of Georgia.

His final was against Kazakhstan's Artyom Sarkissyan, and ended in a 15-9 success for the home favourite.

Giovanni Repetti of Italy ranked joint-third with Bazadze after losing 15-13 to Sarkissyan in the semi-finals.

In the other notable individual results, Hungary's three-time back-to-back Olympic champion Áron Szilágyi was beaten 15-14 in the round of 32 by France's Sebastien Patrice, who went on to lose 15-13 to Sarkissyan in the quarter-finals.

It was Hungary who beat the host nation to take gold in the men's team sabre event, triumphing 45-30 in the final.

Hungary had beaten Turkey 45-32, Japan 45-37 and China 45-37 en route to the final.

Their team consisted of Szilágyi, Szatmári, Csanád Gémesi and Tamás Decsi, all of whom helped Hungary to earn an Olympic bronze medal in this event at Tokyo 2020.

The bronze medal in Padua went to South Korea, who beat China 45-37.

Hungary's capital Budapest is due to host the next men's sabre World Cup from March 24 to 26.
