The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) have announced that nominations are open for the 2023 SP Sports Awards (SPSA).

There will be 13 awards handed out, including the Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, National Performance of the Year, Junior Male Athlete of the Year, Junior Female Athlete of the Year, Community Sports Initiative, Best Sports Person Living with a Disability, Sports Official of the Year, Sports Media of the Year, Sports Photo of the Year, People’s Choice Award (SMS Voting) and the Stan Joyce Award.

"Make A Difference. Stop the Violence" will be the theme of the event.

John Nilkare, SP Brewery corporate affairs manager, talked about the meaning behind the theme.

"Sports unites people and inspires a nation to win," said Nilkare.

"However, the increase in sporting violence is becoming a concern.

"Violence on the playing field sets a bad example for impressionable young Papua New Guineans.

"Unruly crowd behaviour can spoil a pleasant family outing."

The nominations could be made through an online form, as the awards are set to take place on May 27 at the Crowne Hotel in Papua New Guinea.
