The legal battle comes after FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian teams from participating in international competitions on February 28 2022 in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

"Currently, an appeal has been filed with the Supreme Court of Switzerland against the CAS arbitration decision," read a report from the Court, as reported by Russia's official state news agency TASS.

On March 7 last year, the RFU appealed to CAS against the decisions but its complaints were rejected on July 15 by a majority vote of the panel of judges.

The latest appeal is a step further as the Swiss Supreme Court is the highest authority for appealing CAS decisions.

FIFA and UEFA's ban has led the RFU to consider switching its continental allegiances to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

A transfer was almost completed but the RFU Executive Committee eventually decided to shelve the plans.

Instead, a working group was created with UEFA to discuss the continuation of its membership with the European body.

RFU Honorary President Vyacheslav Koloskov revealed that Russian concerns about the move centred around geographical distances, as well as less financial muscle for clubs in the country, as opposed to competing in UEFA tournaments.

However, Russia's participation in the upcoming South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Under-17 Women's Championships suggests the RFU has not completely ruled out a move.

SAFF is part of the AFC and consists of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

While SAFF receives grant funding from the AFC, it is not a member of the organisation in its own right.

FIFA and UEFA's bans meant that Russia could not compete in the qualification rounds for the Qatar 2022 World Cup while Saint Petersburg was stripped of hosting rights for the Champions League final held last May.

Since then, the International Olympic Committee has announced that it is exploring different pathways that would see the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competition.
