Tarnów is getting "closer and closer" to being ready for competition at the Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games, organisers have said.

The city in south-eastern Poland will host four sports during the event - badminton, beach handball, beach soccer and sport climbing.

It lies around 85 kilometres to the east of Kraków, the main hub of the Games which will host events alongside the wider regions of Małopolska and Silesia between June 21 and July 2.

In Tarnów, a new beach arena is being built for the handball and soccer events in the industrial district Mościce.

It will boast 1,000 seats.

Sport climbing will take place at the Tarnów Climbing Centre where an outdoor wall is being erected as well as a temporary grandstand.

The sport could provide a big moment of the Games for hosts Poland as Natalia Kałucka, the reigning women's speed world champion, is from Tarnów.

Her twin sister Aleksandra is also from the city and has medalled at the European Championships.

Badminton will be held at the Jaskolka Arena, also known as Hala Unii, which has room for more than 4,000 fans.

A media centre will be housed within the Mościce Art Center.

"On the technical side, we are getting closer and closer to declaring readiness for the competition," said Tarnów Mayor Roman Ciepiela.

"Whoever will be in Mościce will still see cranes and construction work.

"We already know for sure that all investments will be carried out on time, so by the end of June we will be able to receive the facility, and then the athletes themselves."

Earlier this month, Ciepiela received a replica of the flag for the European Games.

Tarnów has received PLN100 million (£18 million/$22 million/€21 million) of investment for hosting events at the event.

The beach complex will be used for football after competition is over.
