Stolz is high on confidence after capturing five gold medals at last week’s World Junior Championships and continued his flying form in the Polish city.

Nuis has won the event at the past two Winter Olympic Games but he could not stop the 18-year-old who stormed to victory.

Stolz crossed the finish line in 1min 45.44sec to break the track record of 1:45.76 held by Dutch speed skater Thomas Krol.

Nuis finished 0.72 behind Stolz as he had to settle for silver, while Norwegian Sander Eitrem clinched bronze in 1:46.30.

The track record was also broken in the women’s 3,000m final as Norway’s Ragne Wiklund emerged victorious.

Wiklund, a world champion in women’s 1,500m, came out on top in a stunning time of 4:02.79 - smashing triple Olympic champion Irene Schouten's record by more than one second.

Martina Sáblíková of the Czech Republic, who holds the world record, clocked 4:05.67 for silver, while the bronze medal went to Joy Beune of The Netherlands after crossing in 4:08.35.

Austria’s Vanessa Herzog claimed the women’s 500m title, ending South Korea’s Kim Min-sun's winning streak this season.

Herzog recorded 37.96 to beat Kim by just 0.12, while Jutta Leerdam of The Netherlands completed the podium in 38.14.

Canada won men's team sprint gold for the first time in five years courtesy of an impressive performance from Anders Johnson, Laurent Dubreuil and Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu.

The Canadian trio, who were skating together for the first time, triumphed in a time of 1:19.53.

Norway claimed silver in 1:20.89 as The Netherlands bagged bronze in 1:21.61.
