Hosts South Africa earned their first win of the Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup after a comfortable victory against New Zealand in Paarl.

South Africa bounced back from an opening day loss to Sri Lanka to win by 65 runs against a New Zealand side that has lost its first two matches in Group A.

After choosing to bat at Eurolux Boland Park, South Africa compiled 132 for six off their 20 overs, with Chloe Tryon top scoring with 40.

After falling to 13 for two in the third over South Africa rallied to a respectable total, aided by Tryon’s 40 off 34 balls.

New Zealand’s reply got off to the worst possible start as they lost both their openers to ducks at the hands of Nonkululeko Mlaba, who finished with three wickets for 10 runs.

Only three batters made double figures as New Zealand were bundled out for 67, with the highest partnership of the innings just 16 for the sixth wicket.

In the day’s Group B game at the same venue England overcame Ireland by four wickets with impressive spin bowling and aggressive batting seeing them to a win that was more comfortable than the result suggests.

Ireland were bowled out for 105, featuring a top score of 36 for Gaby Lewis, with England’s spin trio of Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn and Charlie Dean combining for eight wickets between them, as Ireland lost eight wickets for 25 runs.

An aggressive batting display from Alice Capsey helped England knock off their target with more than five-and-a-half overs to spare.

Capsey struck 51 runs off 22 balls, with her half-century off 21 the joint fastest at a Women’s T20 World Cup.

Cara Murray took three late wickets as England wobbled going from 70 for one to 103 for six, but the damage was done and they won a second successive match to cement their place at the top of the Group B table.

One match is scheduled for tomorrow, with holders Australia due to take on Bangladesh in Group A at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
