British Olympic and Paralympic athletes training for Paris 2024 have been given extra funding with one year to go.

UK Sport announced additional funding of £4 million ($4.8 million/€4.5 million) across 33 sports to help athletes prepare better by attending more international events, apart from training camps.

With the latest announcement, 26 World Class Programmes will benefit from £3.5 million ($4.2 million/€3.9 million) extra investment.

Progression sports or those identified with long-term medal potential and National Squads Support Fund (NSSF) sports will benefit from £500,000 ($606,865/€566,070) to meet "costs associated with forming and fielding squads for competition on the Olympic and Paralympic qualification pathway".

"With the summer Olympic and Paralympic Games less than 18 months away, the additional investments we are making - which are possible thanks to the support of The National Lottery - are aimed at supporting our sports in the lead in to Paris, while also keeping one eye on the longer term," Kate Baker, director of performance at UK Sport, said.

"It is vital that we focus our resources on supporting our brilliant athletes and staff - with major championships and Paris qualification requirements obviously at the forefront of our minds - and also ensure we continue to strengthen the system going forward.

"Building on the breadth of success we saw across both our Olympic and Paralympic teams in Tokyo and on the excellent results achieved last year, these investments are designed to power our ambition to remain in the top five of both medal tables and to reach, inspire and unite the nation here at home."

Basketball, climbing, fencing, skateboarding, surfing, table tennis and weightlifting make up the progression sports.

Artistic swimming, breaking, baseball, goalball, handball, sitting volleyball, softball, volleyball, water polo and wrestling have been categorised as NSSF.

Archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, canoeing, cycling, diving, equestrian, gymnastics, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, taekwondo and triathlon are the Olympic sports under the World Class Programmes.

Britain finished fourth in the overall standings at Tokyo 2020, winning 64 medals including 22 golds.

At the Paralympics in the Japanese capital, the country was the second-best overall, bagging 124 medals including 41 golds.
