Naomi Osaka of Japan has become the latest big name to withdraw from the Australian Open.

Organisers confirmed the former women's world number one's withdrawal on their Twitter page.

However, no reason was stated behind the decision.

Osaka's withdrawal comes a day after men's world number one Carlos Alcaraz of Spain pulled out after sustaining an injury to the semimembranosus muscle in his right leg while training.

Seven-time major winner Venus Williams is also set to miss the Australian Open.

Osaka, who is a four-time Grand Slam champion, won the Australian Open in in 2019 and 2021.

The 25-year-old took a mental health break by not playing the 2021 French Open.

Osaka also said she has been battling depression and anxiety for several years.

The two-time US Open winner had posted pictures on social media of herself holidaying in Europe recently.

The Japanese star withdrew from the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo last September with abdominal pains and has not played since.

Osaka's last win came against Daria Saville, when the Australian suffered a torn ACL in Tokyo.

She was also knocked out in the first round of her last three events, including the US Open.
