Iranian athlete and former Asian champion Armin Hadipour has retired from taekwondo at the age of 28.

Hadipour represented his country at last year's Tokyo 2020 Olympics, ranking ninth in the men's under-58 kilograms category after winning his first match against Colombia's Jefferson Ochoa before losing in the quarter-finals to Argentina's Lucas Guzmán.

His build-up to the Games had been hampered by tearing his anterior cruciate ligament for the third time in the February prior.

He did not undergo surgery for the injury before the Olympics as this would have ruled him out of the Games.

Hadipour was twice a medallist at the World Taekwondo Championships at under-54kg, taking silver in Muju in 2017 and bronze in Manchester in 2019.

At the Asian Championships, he took under-54kg gold in 2016, and bronze at the same weight in 2018 and 2021.

He was also a three-time Universiade gold medallist, triumphing at under-54kg at Gwangju 2015 and Taipei 2017 and under-58kg at Naples 2019.

His sole World Taekwondo Grand Prix victory came in Manchester in 2018, and he also took two silvers and two bronzes.
