There was another last-lift victory for the host nation in the day's other medal event at 67kg, and another Olympic champion was beaten, making it three in two days.

Silver and bronze medallists from Tokyo last year bombed out, Chinese lifters finished seventh and ninth behind Indonesia’s 1-2, the trend of more no-lifts than good lifts continued, and the crowd was treated to another day of drama.

It started in the 73kg B Group in the afternoon, when the Indonesian Rahmat Erwin made a world record 200kg in the clean and jerk at the second attempt.

Five of Rahmat’s A Group rivals, including the Tokyo 73kg silver medallist Julio Mayora from Venezuela and 67kg bronze medallist Mirko Zanni from Italy, fell away with bomb-outs and his winning total of 352kg was challenged only once, by his team-mate Rizki Juniansyah.

That was on the last lift of the session when Juniansyah went up 6kg to try for 198kg, which would have improved his own junior world records in clean and jerk and total.

He has done it and more in training, he said afterwards, but this time he failed and Rahmat went into the record books as the first lifter to win gold and set a world record from a B Group at an IWF World Championships.

Rahmat, who won an Olympic bronze medal from the B Group last year, said it was "strategy, not injury" that prompted him to compete in the less pressurised B Group and set a target for others to beat.

He lifted 22kg more than his entry total.

Rahmat, 22, had two attempts at the world record after successfully opening at 192kg.

He failed with the first attempt, made the second and could barely stand up after the effort.

Rahmat was so exhausted he was flat out on the floor for about six minutes back in the warm-up room, where his coach helped him back into shape.

"I had a lot of trouble breathing," said Rahmat, who was suffering from the altitude.

"I’ve been OK in training but this time it’s very hard."

Rahmat made 152-200-352, Juniansyah 155-192-347 and bronze medallist Alexey Churkin of Kazakhstan made 153-190-343.

Churkin also competed in the B Group, which produced three of the top five on total.

The finishing order in the snatch was Juniansyah on 155kg, Bozhidar Andreev of Bulgaria on 154kg, and Churkin on 153kg.

In the clean and jerk it was Rahmat, Juniansyah and Churkin, with the B Group lifter Masanori Miyamoto of Japan fourth on 187kg.

There was more drama in the men’s 67kg when for the second day in a row, an Olympic gold medallist was beaten when a Colombian claimed victory with the last lift.

Francisco Mosquera had two chances to overtake China’s Tokyo 2020 champion Chen Lijun in a tense contest in which the top four finishers were separated by only 4kg.

He got the bar above his head at the first attempt but dropped it, then came back and made it to earn a huge cheer from the home crowd.

Mosquera kept throwing his arms wide and blowing kisses to a section of the crowd where his wife, son, mother and trainer were sitting.

This win was the highlight of his career and he said: "They have been there for me through this process, good times and bad, and I want to thank them and God."

Mosquera, 30, made a career-best total of 325kg and is hoping he will get another chance at glory by competing at the Olympic Games for the first time at Paris 2024, for which this was the first qualifying event.

"I could not be in Tokyo last year [Colombia was restricted to only three places because of a long and complicated doping dispute] but in Paris I hope the federation will select me," he said.

In Tokyo, Chen had broken the heart of another Colombian lifter, Luis Javier Mosquera, who is no relation.

Luis Javier, who is training again after surgery on an adductor muscle but was unfit to compete here, thought he had won gold when a no-lift decision was overturned but Chen came out and put 12kg on his previous lift to claim victory.

Here, Chen won the snatch with 148kg and started early and low in the clean and jerk.

He led Mosquera, who was fourth at half-way, by 5kg. 

The silver and bronze snatch medals both went to Thailand's Witsanu Chantri on 144kg and 18-year-old Weeraphon Wichuma on 143kg.

Chen, 29, finished 11kg below his clean and jerk best, and 15kg down on his best total on 148-176-324, but judging by his reaction after a successful final lift, he thought it would be enough.

That was at 6.08pm local time, when six of his rivals had 12 lifts to come between them.

Eighteen minutes later, 20-year old Fehmi Genc had guaranteed gold in clean and jerk on 182kg, the number Mosquera needed for victory, and Weeraphon had finished 1kg short of Chen.

Now there was just one lift remaining, and Mosquera made it to finish 143-182-325.

Wichuma made 143-180-323, and Genc was fourth on 140-182-322.
