Daniel Andrews has won a third term as Victorian Premier after his Labor Party, which brought the Commonwealth Games to the state, enjoyed a resounding election victory.

Labor has won 52 seats at the time of writing - seven more than is needed for a majority.

More seats are still to be decided and it remains possible that Labor ends the election with 55 Members of the Parliament of Victoria - the same number it had pre-vote.

Andrews' re-election represents stability for both local organisers and the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Bringing the Commonwealth Games to Victoria was one of the defining moments of Andrews' second term as Premier, as was his response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jeroen Weimar, who was the state's COVID-19 commander after holding senior positions at VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria, has subsequently been appointed chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.

Victoria 2026 is being presented as the first-ever regional Commonwealth Games, with Melbourne projected to stage only the Opening Ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Gippsland and Shepparton have been selected as regional hubs and each is due to have its own Athletes' Village, as well as staging various sports.

The allocation of events between these hubs was made an election issue by the Liberal Party, Labor's main opposition which has suffered a crushing defeat.

Kardinia Park in Geelong is presently scheduled to hold the Closing Ceremony, but the Liberals want to move the curtain-raiser there too.

The Liberals also wanted to build a new aquatics venue at Kardinia Park, rather than the planned facilities at Armstrong Creek in Geelong.

State capital Melbourne hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Other than the MCG hosting the Opening Ceremony, few venues will be used again under current plans.

The next Commonwealth Games is scheduled to open on Match 17 2026, several months before the Victorians are due to go to the polls again.
