Souza saw off Guo Qing of China to clinch the women’s under-49 kilogram title before 34th seed Kwon stunned defending champion Bradly Sinden of Britain to capture the men’s under-68kg crown at the Centro Acuático CODE Metropolitano.

It was Mexico’s second gold in as many days as Souza’s success backed up Leslie Soltero’s triumph in the women’s under-67kg category yesterday.

Kwon also delivered South Korea a second title in Guadalajara - two days after Park Woo-hyeok won the men’s under-80kg category.

There was concern over Saudi Arabia’s Dunya Ali Abutaleb after she was carried off on a stretcher following a blow to the face as Guo was declared the winner by knockout.

But Abutaleb was present to collect an historic bronze as she became the first Saudi Arabian woman to win a medal in the tournament’s history.

She was joined on the podium by Thailand’s Olympic champion Panipak Wongpattanakit who was stunned by Souza in the semi-finals.

Souza’s shock victory over Wongpattanakit created a deafening noise inside the arena as the Mexican fans roared with delight.

The home crowd had more reason to cheer in the final as an inspired Souza claimed the first round 4-3 against Guo.

The Chinese player hit back to win the second 8-4 but Souza was determined to ensure she came away with the gold medal.

Souza burst into a 5-0 lead and continued to pepper Guo with shots, taking the decider 8-2 to secure the title.

Sinden was the big favourite to capture the men’s under-68kg title but Kwon stood up to the challenge of the Olympic silver medallist.

Kwon edged the first round 5-4 before finding another gear in the next as Sinden fell 10-3 after being on the receiving end of a kick to the head.

Sinden cut the deficit but it was Kwon’s day as the South Korean secured another gold for his nation.

The bronze medals went to Reza Kalhor of Iran and Javad Aghayev of Azerbaijan after reaching the semi-finals.
