Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) has received new funding from Canadian Heritage and Sport Canada for its CSC SportWORKS programme, aiming to "enhance the lives of youth across the Commonwealth".

Sport Canada's Community Sport for All Initiative (CSAI) looks to break down barriers and increase sport participation rates for underrepresented groups.

It supports community groups such as black, indigenous, low income and LGBTQ+ people.

The CSAI funding is given to organisations to administer and disburse project funding to communities.

CSC's SportWORKS initiative Sport for Newcomers is one of these, which then spreads the resources to local organisations in places such as Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, Hamilton, Edmonton, Calgary and Surrey.

"This new funding will provide newcomers with access to different activities and help them find their own love for sports," said Richard Powers, CSC President.

"We believe in the power of sport and its ability to transform lives and know that newcomers to Canada will benefit from the social and health impacts of participating in sport."

The CSC has backed similar initiatives for three decades, including empowerment of women and girls, gender equity, youth leadership development and HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
