The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) President Paul Tergat met with the Cuban Ambassador to Kenya Juan Vazquez in the hopes of forming a sporting partnership between the two countries.

The pair convened at the NOC-K offices at Gallant House in Nairobi where Tergat claimed that a Memorandum of Understanding will be drafted and signed within one week to begin the collaboration process.

"Talks have already started and we are working together with the Cuban government to see what will be our short and long term needs for the two countries," said Tergat, as reported by Nation, adding that Kenya is looking forward to potentially receiving technical support from Cuba at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics in mind.

Tergat said that Cuba has one of the most advanced development programmes for junior athletes and hopes to learn from that.

The main focus of the partnership will be to help Ghana's athletes in boxing and athletics while there are also hopes for exchange programmes in basketball, baseball, cricket, wrestling and beach volleyball.

"Cuba is all time second best in boxing performance at the Olympics, an area we partnered some years back," added Tergat.

Cuba has amassed 41 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze medals in boxing at the Games, which puts the nation behind only the United States on 50 gold, 27 silver and 40 bronze overall.

Besides receiving technical expertise from Cuba, Tergat hopes that Kenyans will also get to attend the National Institute of Sports Medicine and National Institute of Sports Physical Education and Recreation of Cuba as part of the deal.
