Tributes have been paid in the Philippines after taekwondo champion Jeffrey Figueroa died aged just 36.

Figueroa had been diagnosed with a brain tumour and passed away following complications on September 20.

In 2009, he won gold in the bantamweight division at the Asian Martial Arts Games in Bangkok.

He also won bronze at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in Vientiane in Laos in the same year.

After his competitive career, Figueroa moved into coaching.

He worked with athletes including two-time SEA Games gold medallist Kurt Barbosa, a Tokyo 2020 Olympian.

Figueroa also worked on the university circuit.

"PTA is sad to share the news of the passing of one of our own, Jeffrey Figueroa," a statement said.

"He was a good coach who inspired many.

"Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."
