The opening day of the 2022 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's World Cup in Australia is set to proceed on September 22 unaffected by the national day of mourning for the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Organisers of the event consulted with the Australian Government following the announcement of the mourning period and a public holiday and decided it would not postpone the six fixtures scheduled for the first day.

"The Local Organising Committee and FIBA will honour and remember Queen Elizabeth II with a minute's silence prior to the commencement of each session on the opening day of the tournament and during the event’s Opening Ceremony," read a FIBA statement.

Numerous sporting events have already been postponed including 10 matches in the Premier League from the last three days.

Elsewhere in Group A, 10-time champion the United States face Belgium as South Korea and China meet and Puerto Rico challenge Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Prior to the tournament, Australia, Japan, Belgium and France are due to go head-to-head across four practice games at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

The fixtures are part of a two-day test event scheduled to take place on September 16 and 18.
