The Fencing World Championships ended today in Cairo, with Hungary and Italy claiming the final team gold medals of the competition in the women's sabre and men's foil.

Sugar Katinka Battai, Renata Katona, Liza Pusztai and Luca Szucs of Hungary won the women's sabre title at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall Complex.

In the quarter-finals, they defeated Italy's Michela Battiston, Martina Criscio, Rossella Gregorio and Eloisa Passaro 45-43, and in the semi-finals, they won 45-31 over Spanish quartet Elena Hernandez, Lucia Martin-Portugues, Araceli Navarro and Celia Perez Cuenca.

France's Sara Balzer, Sarah Noutcha, Anne Poupinet and Caroline Queroli made the final too - first beating Azerbaijan's Anna Bashta, Valeriya Bolshakova, Sevil Bunyatova and Sabina Karimova 45-25 and then Japan's individual world champion Misaki Emura, Shihomi Fukushima, Kanae Kobayashi and Seri Ozaki 45-43.

The final saw Hungary win 45-40, while Japan took bronze by a 45-43 margin over Spain.

In the men's foil, Italy and the United States met in the final.

Italians Guillaume Bianchi, Alessio Foconi, Rio 2016 Olympic champion Daniele Garozzo and Tommaso Marini progressed to the final four by beating South Koreans Chung Jyae-gyu, Ha Tae-gyu, Heo Jun and Im Cheol-woo 45-30, and made the final with a 45-33 win over Japan's Kazuki Iimura, Kyosuke Matsuyama, Takahiro Shikine and Kenta Suzumura.

The Americans Chase T. Emmer, Nick Itkin, Alexander Massialas and Gerek Meinhardt vanquished Hong Kong's Ka Long Cheung, Chun Yin Ryan Choi, Nicholas Edward Choi and Lok Wang Lawrence Ng 45-35 in the quarter-finals and won their semi-final over France's Maximilien Chastanet, Enzo Lefort, Pierre Loisel and Alexandre Sido 45-44.

It was much more clear-cut in the final, with Italy winning 45-39.

Bronze went to France, after they beat Japan 45-30.
