France's Yannick Borel and Anna Bashta of Azerbaijan were the victors in today's action at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) European Championships in the Antalya Sports Hall.

Borel, a Rio de Janeiro 2016 team gold medallist, is ranked fourth in the world but was only given as the 55th seed for the men's épée tournament in Turkey.

Borel obliterated 28th seed Tristan Tulen of The Netherlands 15-1 in the final in one of the most-dominant performances of the Championships.

Former team world and European champion Max Heinzer of Switzerland faced Borel in the final but was unable to continue his impressive form that had seen him surge to the semi-finals as he suffered a 15-11 loss.

Borel also beat Richard Schmidt of Germany, Denmark's Patrick Jorgensen, and Italian Federico Vismara en route to the final.

He also upset 10th seed Ukrainian and 2017 European champion Volodymyr Stankevych 15-11 in the second round.

In the women's sabre, Bashta secured the biggest win of her career as she beat Italy's Rossella Gregorio 15-9 to secure the continental gold.

The Azeri cruised past Poland's Zuzanna Cieslar of Poland 15-6 in the final four.

Bashta downed pre-tournament favourite and top seed Olga Kharlan 15-14 in a thrilling semi-final duel.

Before that she defeated compatriot Palina Kaspiarovich and Romania's Sabina Martis in the opening rounds.

The European Championships are set to continue tomorrow at the Antalya Sports Hall with the women's team foil and women's team sabre competitions scheduled to take place.
