Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games organisers insist that recruitment is progressing at planned levels, in spite of reports that talks were underway with the army about making up any shortfall.

Chief executive Ian Reid says the Organising Committee is "comfortable with where we are right now" and that recruitment is on a level with where Gold Coast 2018 and Glasgow 2014 were at this time.

A number of short-term roles are still to be filled - with security, catering and cleaning said to be sectors currently most in need - but Birmingham 2022 is adamant this is to be expected with many of these roles lasting only for brief periods.

As part of the recruitment drive, leaflets have been put through doors of residents in the West Midlands region.

"With just less than 50 days to go we are on track to stage an incredible Commonwealth Games and over the last few months we have, along with our suppliers and contractors, been recruiting thousands of people to join us in delivering this fantastic event," Reid said.

"The number of people we have recruited is already on a par with previous editions of the Games, so we are comfortable with where we are right now. Our recruitment campaign is continuing as planned as there are short-term contractor roles available, which start just before the Games get underway.

"These jobs are perfect for people looking for a summer job that they will remember for years to come.

"As with any major event, contingency plans are in place for important areas like security, and we have learnt lessons from other international multi-sport events, so we are working with several different suppliers, in order to reduce any risk in this area.

"Anyone who is interested in working on the Games should go to birmingham2022.com now to register their interest so that they can be part of the biggest sports event to be staged in the UK since the London 2012 Olympics."

In comments reported by the BBC, Reid last week revealed that "up to 5,000 roles are still to be put in place".

Military personnel were previously used at the London 2012 Olympic Games as additional security.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are due to take place from July 28 to August 8.
