Ireland's women's SB8 100 metres breaststroke Paralympic champion Ellen Keane is set to join her team-mates for this month's World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira at a later stage, with her preparations impacted by contracting COVID-19.

Keane has worked remotely with Irish coaching and medical staff to tailor her preparations for the Championships to her recovery from the virus.

Paralympics Ireland's performance director for Para swimming Dave Malone revealed details on how Keane's preparations for the Championships have been adjusted.

"We have been working with Ellen using what we have learned over the past few years to help mitigate the impact of the virus on her preparation for the competition," he said.

"Ellen will now continue her preparation whilst in isolation and will join with the rest of the team when it is safe to do so.

"Our medical team are providing the best possible advice and we are hoping that Ellen will be able to get into the pool and put in her best possible performances."

Keane's triumph in the women's SB8 100m breaststroke at Tokyo 2020 followed a bronze in the same event at Rio 2016.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist in the women's S6 50m butterfly Nicole Turner, Barry McClements and Roisin Ni Riain also feature in the Irish team for the World Championships, while Amy Sheridan is set to make her debut for the country at a major event and serve as its flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony.

The other four team members travelled to the Spanish island of Fuerteventura earlier this week before they are due to travel to Madeira.

The World Para Swimming Championships are due to be held in Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, from June 12 to 18.
