Iga Świątek and Daria Kasatkina have set-up a French Open semi-final showdown after they both achieved straight-sets victories at Roland Garros.

World number one Świątek extended her phenomenal winning streak to 33 consecutive triumphs by defeating 11th seed Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Kasatkina beat Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a tie between two neutral Russian athletes.

Świątek is regarded as the favourite to lift the Grand Slam trophy thanks to her stunning form that has allowed her win titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome.

The Pole took a while to get going with the score levelled 3-3 in the first set but she managed to break the American following a moment of good fortune.

Świątek produced a winner after returning a drop shot, though replays showed the point should have gone to Kasatkina due to a double bounce.

The controversial moment proved to be crucial as momentum swung towards the 21-year-old and she breezed through the second set.

The Pole will equal Venus Williams’ 35-match winning run on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour if she claims the title on Saturday (June 4).

However, she will need to go through 20th seed Kasatkina, who is set to compete in her first senior Grand Slam semi-final.

Following a close first set win against Kudermetova, the second set was even closer as both competitors swapped breaks of serve.

Nevertheless, Kasatkina remained calm and claimed victory with a drop shot on her fifth match point.

Kudermetova, who played in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, was hindered by accumulating 50 unforced errors.

She also needed a medical time-out when she was down 6-5 in the second set.

"You could see the match was really nervous and tight, especially the tie-break, but I am happy at the end I won," Kasatkina commented during an on-court interview.

"It's a very important win for me and I'm happy to be in the semi-final for the first time."

The women’s singles semi-finals are scheduled to be held tomorrow with Italy’s Martina Trevisan and the United States' Coco Gauff competing in the other tie.
