Defending world champions Beatriz Ferreira from Brazil and home favourite Busenaz Sürmeneli from Turkey progressed to the quarter-finals on day seven of the International Boxing Association Women's World Boxing Championships here in Istanbul.

In the under-60 kilogram round of 16, the Brazilian Ferreira defeated Chile's Valentina Bustamente by unanimous decision, moving one step closer to regaining her title.

Sürmeneli sent the crowd into a frenzy when she caused an abandonment early in the second round against the United States' Akira Skoog in the under-66kg.

Charley Davison of England caused a referee's stoppage early in her under-52kg bout with Hainite Kayla Tuitupou of Tonga.

Ireland's Carly McNaul took a 4-0 split decision against Nikolina Cacic of Croatia in the same weight category, continuing a good run of form.

Zareen Nikhat was persistent in her bout against Mongolian Yesugen Oyuntsetseg too, being rewarded with a unanimous victory.

Across the floor, Olena Savchuk from Italy was impressive in her unanimous win over Cathy Jean Satorius of Germany.

In the under-54kg tournament, Dominican Republic's Estefani Almanzar qualified with a well-fought 4-1 split decision victory over Italian Sirine Charaabi.

Another close bout came between Romania's Lacramioara Perijoc and Niamh Fay of Ireland, with the Romanian winning by a 3-2 split.

Jelena Zekic of Serbia won by unanimous decision against Nozimakhon Bulturova from Uzbekistan in the same category. 

Algerian Imane Khelif won unanimously in the under-63kg against Beatris Rozentale from Latvia, while Amy Broadhurst from Ireland was convincing against Bulgarian Aslahan Mehmedova, winning by the same score.

American boxer Rashida Ellis continued to look like a worthy contender for Ferreira's under-60kg title with a unanimous victory over Krisandy Rios of Venezuela.

World champion from 2016 Alessia Mesiano of Italy was victorious in this category too, beating Kiria Tapia from Puerto Rico unanimously.

Natalia Sandrina from Serbia progressed after a bloody bout with England's Shona Whitwell, with the score finishing 5-0 as well.

Aside from Sürmeneli's win, Turkey had a mixed day of results.

Hatice Akbaş won comfortably against Ekaterina Sycheva of Armenia in the under-54kg, while Olympic and world silver medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu took a 5-0 win in the under-50kg against Roumaysa Boualam from Algeria.

Gizem Özer was defeated by Olga Papadatou of Greece by unanimous decision in the under-63kg.

This followed on from Beyza Saracoğlu's exit in the under-52kg category, losing unanimously to Brazilian Caroline de Almeida.
