It was a day of few upsets at the Thomas and Uber Cups in Bangkok, where heavyweights including Viktor Axelsen's Denmark and Kento Momota's Japan clinched their places in the quarter-finals of the men's team tournament.

Olympic champion Axelsen made it two wins from two for Denmark in Group B as he set them on their way to a 5-0 victory against France at the Thai capital's Impact Arena, beating Toma Junior Popov 21-8, 21-11.

China join them in the knockout stage after a 5-0 whitewash of Algeria, and are due to face Denmark tomorrow to determine who tops the group.

In Group D, world number two Momota showed signs of getting back to his best after a shock first-round exit at last month's Asian Championships, kick-starting a 5-0 win for Japan over England by beating Toby Penty 21-18, 21-11.

Five-time winners Malaysia also have two wins in Group D after seeing off the United States 5-0.

They join defending champions Indonesia, South Korea, India and Chinese Taipei, who booked their places in the last eight yesterday, in advancing.

In the Uber Cup, defending champions China made a statement of intent with their 5-0 victory over a reshuffled Chinese Taipei team in Group B.

Both teams advanced to the quarter-finals yesterday, and China made sure of top spot with their third win, with Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Chen Yufei triumphing 21-15, 21-13 against Hsu Wen-Chi in the first match.

Hosts Thailand thrashed Denmark 5-0 in the Group C match between two teams already assured of their quarter-final berths.

The 2018 winners Japan eased through in Group A, along with Indonesia.

Japan cruised past France 5-0, a scoreline matched by Indonesia against Germany.

Both Group D matches finished 4-1, sending South Korea and India through.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist PV Sindhu beat Jennie Gai 21-10, 21-11 in India's win against the United States, while South Korea defeated Canada.

Group-stage action at the Thomas and Uber Cups is due to conclude tomorrow.
