Norway's Sander Aae Skotheim and Annik Kälin of Switzerland lead in the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event in Grosseto in Italy.

Skotheim sits atop the men's decathlon standings following the conclusion of five events at the 35th Multistars meeting.

The 19-year-old's best performance came in the long jump where he scored 1,002 points from a leading jump of 7.77 metres at the Stadio Carlo Zecchini.

He then topped the charts once more with a 2.16m effort in the high jump which resulted in 953 points.

A disappointing 719-point 13.84m shot put performance allowed the chasing pack to catch up, but 823 points and 873 points in the 100m and 400m from times of 11.17sec and 48.76 solidified his place with 4,370 points overall.

Italy's Dario Dester follows close behind on 4,278 points and is on track to beat his decathlon personal best of 7,936.

Despite not producing a leading performance in any discipline, the home favourite's consistency keeps him in the race for gold.

Skotheim's compatriot Markus Rooth completes the men's top three on 4,207 points.

Rooth bagged the majority of his points in the long jump with a 7.70m effort for 985 points.

Kälin has developed a 113-point lead in the women's heptathlon.

She amassed 1,060 points in the 100 metres hurdles after posting a time of 13.43sec and has 3,715 overall.

Paulina Ligarska led the way in both the high jump and shot put events but still finds herself behind with 3,602 points.

The Pole claimed 1,016 points in the high jump with a 1.83 metres attempt before picking up 794 points from a 14.00m shot put throw.

However she was let down by her performances in the hurdles and 200m events, with times of 14.21 and 25.48 for 949 and 843 points.

Sveva Gerevini of Italy rounds out the current top three on 3,520 points while the United States' Shaina Burns is hot on her tail with 3,510 points.

The overall champions are set to be decided tomorrow.
