Neil Robertson became the eighth player to score a maximum at the World Snooker Championship in his second round match with Jack Lisowski

Jack Lisowski knocked out pre-tournament favourite Neil Robertson in a deciding frame in the most dramatic match of the World Snooker Championship so far, which saw the Australian make a maximum break of 147.

Robertson became the eighth player to score a maximum in the tournament’s 45 years at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, and the first since Scotland’s John Higgins two years ago.

The achievement came in the 19th frame of the match, and it was the fifth time in his career that Robertson had achieved a maximum.

Resuming at 9-7 going into the final session, Lisowski extended his lead to three by winning the opener before Robertson won four in a row to lead 11-10, a run that included the maximum.

Lisowski levelled with a break of 88 to make it 11-11, before the English player again later levelled the contest at 12-12, forcing a decider with a 72 clearance.

In the first match to go the distance at this year’s tournament, the crucial moment in the deciding frame came when Lisowski trapped his opponent in a difficult snooker behind the brown.

Robertson escaped but left a red on and Lisowski made a break of 25 to clinch victory.

England’s Judd Trump, the 2019 world champion, closed out a nervy 13-11 victory against Scotland’s Anthony McGill.

Trump resumed with a 10-6 lead and after the pair exchanged century breaks in the first two frames, McGill closed the gap to one winning three straight frames including a break of 124.

Trump led 12-11, and although McGill had a chance to force a decider he missed a tricky red, with Trump coming through courtesy of a 55 break and winning a safety battle on the yellow.

Scotland’s John Higgins, a four-time world champion, earned a comfortable victory against Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham 13-7 in their second round encounter.

Higgins started the final session with an 11-5 lead and won the first on a respotted black.

Saengkham won two successive frames, coming up short in a maximum attempt in the second of them, missing the final red to end on 112.

A break of 90 in the next saw Higgins over the line, to set up a meeting with Lisowski in the last eight.

In an all-English affair, 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham ran out a 13-9 winner over compatriot Kyren Wilson, runner-up in 2020.

The match resumed at 8-8, but Bingham won the first four frames with a top break of 97 to put himself on the brink of victory.

Bingham claimed victory in frame 22 as he cleared to the blue to set up a quarter-final against Trump.

Quarter-final matches are due to take place tomorrow and Wednesday (April 27).
