After the match England captain Millie Giglio said: "It was a really good start from the girls and it was good to get the cobwebs out and start the tournament on a high."

Today also saw The Netherlands thrash the United States 9-0 in Pool A .

The Netherlands have the most World Cup wins to date with three and today’s victory gives them an ideal start in their quest to gain a fourth.

Alexi Terblanche and Lilian Pope starred in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 win over Canada, also in Pool A, giving them a good start under head coach Tendayi Maredza.

South Korea beat Uruguay 1-0 thanks to a late goal courtesy of Sunghee Jung, in their Pool A match.

The final match of day one saw Argentina, the reigning FIH Women's Junior World Cup champions, in ominous form against Austria.

Argentina won 8-0 with Daiana Pacheco scoring three times in a comprehensive victory.

The remaining teams are scheduled to play their first matches tomorrow.

The FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup, in its ninth edition since being established in 1989, is scheduled to conclude on April 12.

The competition was initially scheduled to include 16 teams with competitors under the age of 21 from across five continents. 

However, Ukraine was forced to withdraw from the competition following the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Other teams including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Belgium and Spain also had to withdraw due to the coronavirus pandemic.
