Tributes have been paid to Scotland’s Commonwealth Games track cyclist John Paul, who has died at the age of 28.

Paul was crowed men’s sprint champion at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Junior World Championships in 2011.

He represented Scotland at a home Commonwealth Games in Glasgow during 2014.

Paul competed in the men’s sprint and keirin events at the Games, reaching the semi-finals in the latter.

"Sending our thoughts to the family and friends of John Paul at this sad time," Team Scotland said.

"A valued member of Team Scotland at Glasgow 2014 and much loved within the cycling community."

The Glasgow Track Racing Club, where Paul was a member, said a memorial service would be held by the club.

The club described Paul as a "remarkable man".

"There will be talk of the once in a generation talent that John possessed on a bike, but his ability to inspire, encourage and joke around off the bike was where we valued him most," they said.

"JP was a truly remarkable man, with a love & passion for the sport that he used to help those around him.

"John came to a training camp with us last summer at Newcastle U-Lyme after six years away from the sport and slotted into our group as if he’d never been away.

"He was sparing with his time & knowledge to always bring up those around him.

"As a man he was also someone who cared so deeply for his family and took great pride in telling us stories about them.

"We cannot begin to imagine their loss and grief and can only send our love and condolences their way."

Tributes have also been paid by Olympians Katie Archibald and Callum Skinner.

Both were members of Scotland’s track cycling team at Glasgow 2014.

"Tragic news, an amazing teammate through most of my career, a guy who marched to the beat of his own drum and a good friend," Skinner wrote.

“Thoughts with his family who were always with John at every event and well known to the team.”

"Painfully sad news," Archibald said.

"I looked up to John Paul - a Scottish rider who made it in the big leagues.

"Can't imagine the agony his family feels to have lost him so young.

"My heart aches to consider it. Rest in peace JP."
