Double Tokyo 2020 triathlon medallists Alex Yee and Georgia Taylor-Brown are among the first athletes selected by England for this year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Yee and Taylor-Brown finished as the runners-up in the men’s and women’s individual events in the Japanese capital last year, respectively, before winning gold in the mixed team competition.

"When I watched the London Olympics and how the crowd really got behind everyone, I thought it was quite sad that that may never happen again in my lifetime, so to be able to be at a home Games for the Commonwealth Games is quite incredible and something you’ll cherish and relish in as the crowds will really get behind you," said Taylor-Brown.

"Once we'd won our medals at the Olympics, I think it was Alex that said, 'it’s cool that we’re now selected for the Commonwealth Games', so that was a nice surprise, not only do we get an Olympic medal, but we’re also selected for Birmingham.

"I’m quite excited about it."

Three members of the victorious mixed team will represent England at the home Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, with Jonathan Brownlee having also been selected.

The gold medal completed Brownlee’s collection of Olympic medals, having won individual bronze at London 2012 and silver at Rio 2016.

Brownlee has also enjoyed success at the Commonwealth Games, winning mixed team gold and individual silver at Glasgow 2014.

The silver medal came after finishing as the runner-up behind brother Alistair.

Brownlee secured his third Commonwealth Games podium finish at Gold Coast 2018, as part of England’s silver medal winning team in the mixed relay.

The four-member England triathlon squad for Birmingham 2022 is completed by Sophie Coldwell.

Coldwell will be competing at a second Commonwealth Games, after placing sixth in the women’s event at Gold Coast 2018.

She earned medals at World Triathlon Championship Series races in Leeds and Abu Dhabi.

"It is with a huge amount of pride and excitement that we get to announce such a strong team of athletes in the first of what will be three separate selection meetings before the Games," said Jonathon Riall, Team England’s triathlon team leader.

"To be able to announce four athletes is testament to the incredibly high standards achieved by the English athletes and therefore huge credit needs to go to the British coaches within our centres who have supported these athletes to date.

"I want to say a massive congratulations to Alex, Jonny, Georgia and Sophie, who have all shown the potential to compete at the highest level in Birmingham next year."

The remaining triathletes and PTVI Para triathletes to compete in the Commonwealth Games for Team England are due to be announced in the build up to Birmingham 2022.

Triathlon will be the first medal event contested at Birmingham 2022 on July 29, with competition due to take place at Sutton Park.

Competition will also be held on July 31.

The Commonwealth Games will take place from July 28 to August 8, with hosts England expected to be represented by around 400 athletes.
