Renowned sports institution Loughborough University will host an England team immersion camp in the build-up to next year's home Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Competitors from sports including swimming, athletics and wheelchair basketball will take part in the camp, using the university's technical training facilities and staying at the Burleigh Court Conference Centre and Hotel and the Elite Athlete Centre and Hotel on the campus.

A full integration of Para sport is promised as part of the agreement.

The West Park Teaching Hub will also be used for England's Commonwealth Games "kitting out" event, where the team will receive their attire for competition.

Mark England, the country's Chef de Mission for Birmingham 2022, expressed his delight at securing the use of Loughborough University's facilities.

"It’s really important Team England athletes have the opportunity to come together in advance of the Games, and to have world-class facilities in which to train," he said.

"Loughborough University, quite rightly, has received recognition as one of the finest global sports universities and it's a pleasure to be hosting the nation’s home team there in the run-up to the biggest multi-sports event in the UK since London 2012."

The vice-chancellor and President of the University Professor Nick Jennings added: "We are thrilled to welcome Team England to Loughborough ahead of the home Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

"Loughborough is well known for its sporting success and many of Team England’s athletes, coaches, and practitioners are very familiar with our elite-level sporting environment and world-class facilities.

"We would like to wish them - and all Loughborough-linked athletes - the very best for what I’m sure will be another fantastic summer of global sport."

Birmingham is approximately 40 miles from Loughborough, and Games venues are distributed across the West Midlands region.

England finished second in the medals table at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning 45 golds, 45 silvers and 46 bronzes.

Birmingham 2022 is due to take place from July 28 to August 8.
