In the women's event, South Korea defeated Latvia 8-5 in the second of the women’s qualification matches.

South Korea’s team of lead Seon-Yeong Kim, second ChoHi Kim, third Kyeong-Ae Kim and skip Eun-Jung Kim, alongside alternate Yeong-Mi Kim took an early lead in the contest with a score of three in the second end, thanks to a successful hit from skipper Kim.

It proved to be the difference in the contest with the countries then going on to exchange scores before South Korea won by a three-point margin.

Their victory could have been greater with Latvia skipper Evelina Barone facing a score of four against her when she came to play her last stone on end nine, but she scored one to cut the gap to 7-5.

In the tenth end Korea were holding one meaning they did not have to play their last stone.

South Korea join Britain and Japan as the teams to secure their places in the women’s curling competition at Beijing 2022 from the Olympic Qualification Event, which concluded today in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

Reflecting on the match South Korea’s skipper Kim said: "We got three points in the second end and that made us feel comfortable, but Latvia is a good team. We got a little nervous later, but it worked out OK."

The last place in the men’s curling competition at Beijing 2022 went to Denmark, who defeated Czech Republic 8-5 in the second men’s qualification match.

Denmark’s team of lead Kasper Wiksten, second Henrik Holtermann, third Mads Noergaard and skip Mikkel Krause overturned a 4-1 deficit at the halfway point of the match to secure their spot in Beijing.

Czech Republic took advantage of errors from Krause to steal single shots in the fourth and fifth ends, allowing them to open up a three-point advantage at the halfway point of the contest.

The Danes cut the deficit in end six with a score of two to reduce the gap to one, and took the lead for the first time in the eighth end as Krause drew with his last stone to score three shots and make it 6-5.

Denmark stole two points in the ninth end after Czech Republic skip Lukas Klima missed an attempted double take-out, and the 8-5 margin was enough for Denmark to secure victory.

Looking forward to the Winter Olympics Krause said: "Olympic qualification means everything. I’ve been working for this for the past 25 years.

"Basically, it’s been a goal of mine to get to the Olympics and to actually get there is just fantastic.

"This is a very big deal in Danish sport, because the Winter Olympics is not very big in Denmark. It will be crazy and it is really important for curling in Denmark."

Curling competition at Beijing 2022 is scheduled to take place at the National Aquatics Centre from February 2 to 20.
