Italy's reigning Olympic champion Sofia Goggia triumphed in the women's downhill event at the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Val d'Isère.

This was Goggia's seventh consecutive victory on the circuit in the downhill discipline, and her fourth overall this season.

She finished in 1min 41.71sec, and the gold medal helped her leapfrog the United States' Mikaela Shiffrin at the top of the overall standings.

Shiffrin is only competing in tomorrow's super-G event in France.

It was a familiar look to the podium, with Breezy Johnson of the US finishing second for the third time in a downhill event this season.

Johnson clocked 1:41.98 to take silver, with bronze going to Austria's Mirjam Puchner after her time of 1:42.62.

Slovakia's Petra Vlhová is third overall for the season, but is not competing in Val d'Isère this weekend.

Shiffrin has 525, while Goggia now leads the way with 10 more points.

The next downhill event on the women's Alpine Skiing World Cup circuit is scheduled to take place at Zauchensee in Austria on January 15.

The season continues with the super-G in Val d'Isère tomorrow, and is set to be followed by back-to-back giant slalom World Cups in Courchevel on Tuesday (December 21) and Wednesday (December 22).
