Over 96 per cent of the City Cast volunteers who helped support the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games would participate in volunteering at a future event if they were offered the opportunity to do so, a survey has revealed.

There were 16,151 City Cast volunteers, who were tasked with welcoming and supporting spectators, including guiding around competition venues and providing transport information at airports and major stations.

The survey, conducted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), asked volunteers for their opinions about volunteer activities at the Games in an attempt to improve the volunteering process for future events and projects.

Of the 7,682 responses, 96.4 per cent said they would like to volunteer in future activities and events.

More specifically, 37.7 per cent agreed with the statement that they "would definitely like to do so" and 58.7 per cent agreed with the statement they "would like to do
so if I have the opportunity."

Over 70 per cent said they would be interested in volunteering "sports" events, 65.5 per cent said they would want to volunteer in "regional revitalisation, town development and tourism" activities and 60.4 per cent said they would be interested in volunteering at "multicultural coexistence and international cooperation" events, where participants could provide multiple answers.

Volunteers strongly indicated they wanted the TMG to provide more information on future events, such that they can get involved in volunteering - 72 per cent said the TMG, "to facilitate participation in volunteer activities", could "provide opportunities for volunteer activities" and 65.1 per cent said the TMG could "provide information on volunteer activities".

In response to the survey's results, the TMG announced user registration for the Tokyo Volunteer Legacy Network, which opened on November 2.

The network is a volunteering portal that aims to provide participants with opportunities that match their interests.

The TMG said it will also ensure there are more opportunities for City Cast volunteers.
