Tarr, who was an assistant coach for the US women's team at this year's Olympics, where they won a silver medal, is the sixth woman to be named American head coach and the first since 1998.

Tarr also helped the US win the Pan American Championship in 2017 and a world title in 2018 as an assistant coach.

"We are honored to have Coach Tarr leading our Women’s National Team for the 2022 season," USA Softball chief executive Craig Cress said. 

"Since being involved as a head coach for the Junior Women’s National Team and assistant coach for the Women’s National Team, Coach Tarr has played a key role in continuing the legacy of USA Softball while shaping and developing the programme throughout the last few years. 

"We believe she brings top-notch skills, knowledge and experience as our next head coach after being a part of our US Olympic Softball Team’s silver medal finish at the Tokyo Olympics. 

"We look forward to watching Coach Tarr and the Women’s National Team represent Team USA next summer."

On top of her duties with he national team, Tarr will continue to coach the Washington Huskies.

Tarr has won 704 games over 17 seasons - more wins than any other University of Washington coach in any sport - and led the Huskies to a National Championship in 2019.

Women's softball is set to be played at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex during the Birmingham 2022 World Games.

Olympic champions Japan, Mexico, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Australia, Italy and China are due to join the US in the eight-team tournament. 

The next Softball World Cup is not due to begin until 2023.
