The second leg of the 2021 World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold season is due to take place tomorrow in Amorebieta in Spain, with Ugandan runners Thomas Ayeko and Joel Ayeko leading the men's field at the 67th Cross Internacional Zornotza.

A serious challenge would need to come from elsewhere to defeat the two athletes - who are not related - from taking the win.

Both placed in the top 10 at the 2019 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Aarhus in Denmark.

Thomas Ayeko was seventh and his compatriot was 10th that day, with the former winning the Cross Internacional Zornotza back in 2016 too.

Eritrean steeplechaser Yemane Hailesilassie seems to be the best bet outside of Uganda, having finished fifth in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at the Olympics in Tokyo earlier this year and has posted quick mile times recently, however he will need to show form over the 10,700m course.

Awet Habte, also of Eritrea, will be in the fight too off the back of a third-place finish at the Lisbon Half Marathon with a new best of 1 hour 02min 11sec.

Another half marathon specialist, Burundi's Onesphore Nzikwinkunda, and local favourite 22-year-old Ouassim Oumaiz are others vying for the podium.

In the women's 6,700m race, Ugandan 5,000m and 10,000m national record holder Sarah Chelangat is one of the top names on the start list.

At 20-years-old, she will only continue to improve and her performance in Amorebieta could be an indicator of form.

Eritrea's Dolshi Tesfu was 15th in the women's 10,000m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and finished second in the women's race at the Lisbon Half Marathon in 1:10:59, making her one of the favourites for the race win tomorrow.

Amorebieta is a town just outside the city of Bilbao in the Basque Country.

The opening event of the new Tour Gold in Cardiff last Saturday (October 16) was largely a British domestic affair with Hugo Milner winning the men's race and Charlotter Arter taking the women's event.

The World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold calendar was unveiled earlier this year to replace the challenge and permit series.

The series is expected to have stops in North America, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Europe and will incorporate many of the world’s biggest and most prestigious cross-country meetings.
