World Lacrosse chief executive Jim Scherr believes this weekend's Super Sixes tournament in the United States will "further showcase the sport on our journey to Olympic inclusion".

Men's and women's teams from Canada, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the US are due to head to Baltimore to compete in the event less than six months after the six-a-side format of the sport was launched.

The round-robin tournament will feature six games both tomorrow and Sunday (October 24), with the action held at Tierney Field on the USA Lacrosse complex in Sparks.

Super Sixes is the fourth in a series of five events for the new brand of the sport this year, and the first international sixes competition for Canada and the US.

The Haudenosaunee women's team participated in last month's PALA Sixes Cup under the Iroquois Nationals name.

World Lacrosse's Sixes Series started in the United Kingdom in August with The Fly held in England and the Home Nations 6s in Scotland.

The US then played host to the PALA Sixes Cup in September and will stage the Super Sixes this weekend before Costa Rica holds the Torneo Centroamericano Bicentenario Sixes Lacrosse from December 2 to 5.

"Following our launch of World Lacrosse Sixes less than six months ago, the new discipline has continued to gain popularity around the world due to its broader appeal, wider access and superfast-paced format," said Scherr.

"Having the world's top teams going head-to-head in sixes for the first time will make for an incredibly exciting weekend in Baltimore, and will further showcase the sport on our journey to Olympic inclusion."

The sixes format was developed and officially launched in May in a bid to accelerate the growth of the sport.

Major differences to the traditional lacrosse game include a smaller field, fewer players, a condensed game length, fewer stoppages in play and the addition of a 30-second shot clock.

It is hoped the discipline will appeal more to the International Olympic Committee which wants to reduce the cost and complexity of the Games and promote more youth-focused sports.

World Lacrosse is aiming to get sixes on the Olympic programme at Los Angeles 2028.

The format is due to be played at the Birmingham 2022 World Games.
