Eva Werthmann is the new head of communications for the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), taking over the rule from the start of next month, it has been announced.

The DOSB declared the move in Frankfurt yesterday, with Ulrike Spitz, the previous head of media and public relations at the DOSB, set to retire on December 1.

Spitz took up the post in September 2015.

Werthmann has been the press spokesperson for the German Triathlon Union (DTU) since 2017, where she was also responsible for communication to the DOSB.

The 38-year-old has previously worked with the International Paralympic Committee, including as senior manager of media operations, and studied sports science with a focus on media and communications at the Germany Sports University Cologne.

Werthmann arrives at the DOSB soon after President Alfons Hörmann announced he would step down following allegations of creating a "culture of fear", jumping before he could be faced with a potential vote of no confidence.

The DOSB Ethics Commission has recommended elections take place in December.

The idea was initially rejected by Hörmann and the Presidium, which faced heavy criticism from German politicians, though an election for the DOSB Presidency is now expected to take place in early December.

Outgoing International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) President Thomas Weikert has been tipped for the role.

Weikert is set to leave the ITTF following a long-standing dispute with the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee accuse him of losing the "trust, confidence and support" of the organisation, while Weikert says he does not agree with "the course that the ITTF and WTT [World Table Tennis] are taking".

Werthmann's former boss and DTU President Martin Engelhardt has also been tipped to replace Hörmann.

Engelhardt lost to Hörmann in a 2018 vote, earning 15 per cent of ballots in comparison to Hörmann's 85 per cent.
