Sunday's (October 3) National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Final between the Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs at Brisbane's Lang Park will be held in front of a reduced crowd of 39,000 following the imposition of tightened COVID-19 restrictions by the Queensland Government, and could still be moved to Townsville.

The match had initially been due to be played in front of a capacity 52,000 crowd, with tickets quickly selling out on Monday (September 27).

However, Queensland Government has limited the number of spectators at sporting events to 75 per cent of the venue's capacity.

Queensland has largely managed to avoid tougher lockdown restrictions imposed in states such as New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria in recent months, but its capital Brisbane was among the areas to move to stage two restrictions yesterday.

The NRL said the final 25 per cent of fans who bought tickets in each allocation for the Grand Final will be automatically refunded and contacted as soon as possible.

Those in attendance are required to wear masks at all times, except when eating or drinking.

This is the first time in NRL history that the Grand Final is being held outside of Sydney, after the NSW Government confirmed that it could not host the match because of the pandemic, with its capital in lockdown since July.

"This year we will create history, playing the grand final in Brisbane for the very first time," said the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARL) chairman Peter V'landys.

"This will be a historic moment for the city and a reward for the support the Queensland community has given us throughout 2021.

"This year will always be remembered as the year Queensland hosted all of our major events - All Stars, Magic Round, three State of Origins and the grand final."

However, as reported by Australian outlet 7News, the Country Bank Stadium remains on standby should further restrictions be imposed on the state capital.

The venue in Townsville, more than 1,300 kilometres north of Brisbane, holds 25,000 and would be limited to 19,000 fans were the Grand Final to be moved there.

Queensland recorded six new COVID-19 cases yesterday.

"It’s going to be critical, the next 24 to 48 hours, if we see any seeding in the community," state premier Annastacia Palaszczuk warned.

"As soon as [Queensland chief health officer] Dr [Jeannette] Young says we need to go into a lockdown, we will."

The two teams are looking to win the NRL for the second time.

Last year's runners-up, the Panthers, last triumphed in 2003, while the Rabbitohs are featuring in their first Grand Final since their 2014 victory.

The 2020 Grand Final, won by Melbourne Storm, was held in front of just over 37,000 fans at Sydney's Stadium Australia.

This year's National Rugby League Women's Premiership (NRLW) has been postponed until 2022, while Australia and New Zealand pulled out of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England because of COVID-19 concerns, with the tournament now postponed until October and November 2022.
