They were the top seeded competitors in the category and won all their matches by ippon.

Spijkers then produced a huge o-uchi-gari to flatten Simionescu for ippon.

Russia’s Arman Adamian captured the men’s under-100kg crown with victory over Dario Kurbjeweit Garcia of Germany.

The European Games champion thought he had won inside the 17 seconds when he registered an ippon only for it to be lowered to waza-ari following a review by the video referee.

Kurbjeweit Garcia tried to respond but Adamian counterattacked his opponent to score a second waza-ari.

Dutch judoka Simeon Catharina and Croatia’s Marko Kumrić won their respective bronze medal matches to seal places on the podium.

France earned its third gold medal of the tournament to top the standings courtesy of Julia Tolofua’s victory in the over-78kg final.

Tolofua proved too strong for Hungary’s Mercedesz Szigetvari who was penalised three times to hand her opponent the title.

The bronze medals were won by Germany’s Renee Lucht and France’s Laura Fuseau.
