The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) has already been assigned two men's singles berths at next year's Winter Olympics, and can increase that to the maximum of three should a Russian finish in the top seven at the Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf.

Skaters can compete under the Russian flag in Germany, although will be "neutral" ROC athletes in Beijing.

Twenty-two-year-old Aliev headlined the Russian entries for the tournament, with seven athletes set to compete in the men's singles.

State-run news agency TASS reports that Aliev will now not skate at the Nebelhorn Trophy, however, putting his participation at the Winter Olympics in serious jeopardy.

Mikhail Kolyada and Evgeni Semenenko earned the two ROC men's singles places at the Olympics at this year's Figure Skating World Championships in Stockholm, and seemingly any third berth would not be won by Aliev, but it would ultimately be up to the ROC and Figure Skating Federation of Russia to decide which athletes to nominate for Beijing 2022.

Aliev has seen his progress hampered by injuries since winning the European title in 2020.

Aliev missed much of last year with a back problem and also tested positive for COVID-19, limiting competition opportunities.

In addition to the 2020 European title, Aliev won the silver medal in 2018 - the same year he finished seventh at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and the World Championships.

At the Lillehammer 2016 Youth Olympic Games, Aliev won a bronze medal in the men's singles and gold in the mix-nationally team event.
