The Russian Biathlon Union's (RBU) Anastasiia Goreeva and home athlete Vitezslav Hornig won the first gold medals of the Summer Biathlon World Championships in Nové Město.

Goreeva was victorious in the junior women's super sprint, completing the 7.5-kilometre course on roller skis in 23min 16.5sec, despite five shooting penalties.

Windy conditions at the Czech venue made shooting difficult, with runner-up Sanita Bulina from Latvia incurring six penalties and Czech third-place finisher Tereza Vobornikova five.

Bulina was 6.3sec behind the leader, and Vobornikova - who had been the fastest qualifier - 13.3 back.

In the men's junior super sprint, Hornig had a 100 per cent record through the first two shooting stations but incurred three penalties at the last two.

Nonetheless, he was able to cross the line in 20:00.2, leading home a Czech one-two with Thomas Mikyska 1.4sec behind.

The RBU's Dmitrii Shamukaev was third.

Hornig was strong all day and placed second in the 4.5km qualifier for the final.

Senior men's and women's super sprints are scheduled tomorrow at the International Biathlon Union event.
