A team of 240, including guides for six athletes with visual impairments, has been officially selected by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

It will be the second-largest team ever taken to the Games by the US.

The largest American delegation ever - a team of 289 - was taken to Rio 2016.

"At its core, the Paralympic Games represent inclusivity and the infinite possibility of sport," said USOPC chief executive Sarah Hirshland.

"This group of athletes represents Team USA at their best.

"They are strong, resilient and ready to make you proud."

There are 129 returning Paralympians, with three of them set to compete at a sixth Games - goalball's Asya Miller, table tennis player Tahl Leibovitz and wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden, a seven-time Paralympic champion.

Another 10 are to become five-time Paralympians, 14 are to represent the US for a fourth time at the Paralympics, and 105 athletes are set to make their debuts.

"After an unparalleled year, our incredible roster of 234 athletes and six guides are ready to show the world the athleticism and determination of Team USA on the Tokyo stage," added USOPC chief of Paralympic sport Julie Dussliere.

"We can’t wait to cheer them on as they live out their dreams in front of the nation and the globe."

The most decorated athletes in the squad are 23-time Paralympic swimming medallist Jessica Long and 17-time athletics medallist Tatyana McFadden.

Another notable name to feature on the team is cyclist Oksana Masters, who is a two-time cross-country skiing Paralympic gold medallist and bronze medallist in rowing from London 2012.

Wheelchair tennis player David Wagner - an eight-time medallist - and triathlete Brad Snyder- a seven-time medallist in swimming - have been included too.

There will be 22 sports on the Paralympic programme at Tokyo 2020.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics are scheduled to take place from August 24 to September 5, after they were postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
