Across the first nine days of action, over 100 million people have watched Discovery's Tokyo 2020 Olympics coverage in Europe, excluding Russia, while a further 175 million have watched via Discovery's sublicense agreements with partner free-to-air broadcasters.

During the first week, consumers watched almost 750 million streaming minutes of Olympics content on Discovery+ and Eurosport subscription services.

New digital subscriptions reached double the total acquired during Pyeongchang 2018.

In total, 275 million have watched Olympic coverage via Discovery's channels or sublicense agreements.

This represents an increased reach of 10 per cent from Pyeongchang 2018.

Similarly, the average audience share of Discovery’s subscription channels has improved by more than 30 per cent.

Jean-Briac Perrette, Discovery International President and chief executive, said: "The Olympic Games is the biggest global event that goes far beyond sports and traditional sports audiences.

"When we look back at the first week, it is clear the Olympics has brought new and different audiences to our platforms in impressive numbers. 

"The Tokyo Games are seeing digital numbers never seen before, and we are thrilled that so many fans across Europe are watching the Games on Discovery+ and Eurosport Player."

In Britain, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which has sublicensed coverage from Discovery, recorded 68.8 million online viewing requests across its BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website and app.

Almost 33 million have watched the Olympics on BBC television channels.

A further 20.6 million have visited the Olympics pages on the BBC Sport website and app.
