Raised in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands and a former student of Aston University in Birmingham, the 24-year-old arrived back from Tokyo on Tuesday (July 27) before attending the one-year-to-go festival for Birmingham 2022 the following day.

Orie was in Japan training with Clarke, who was selected to compete for Britain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Clarke won his opening bout in the men's over-91-kilogram category against Ukraine's Tsotne Rogava.

"I came back yesterday, I was the sparring partner for Frazer Clarke who will be competing tomorrow," Orie told insidethegames.

"It's amazing for me as I'll be able to absorb that experience from the likes of Frazer who will then go on to do great things in the sport. 

"It's going to pay me dividends in the future while I gain my experience."

Orie moved to Wolverhampton at the age of seven from Russia, having been born to a Russian mother and Nigerian father in Moscow.

Yet to become a British citizen - something he hopes to achieve before the Paris 2024 Olympics - he is still eligible to compete for England at the Commonwealth Games.

He relishes the opportunity to compete at the event in front of a local crowd, noting that Birmingham's diversity is one of his favourite things about the city.

"It means everything for me," added Orie.

"Being a West Midlands boy and growing up here and walking around here, it'll mean a lot to give back and get people together, get them supporting, get them cheering.

"I'll be thinking about it every day, 365 times until the day it starts.

"The biggest thing I'm looking forward to is having the people there while you’re competing. 

"It's been a couple of years now where I haven't had that face-to-face support in person, so to be able to have that in your home city and home crowd supporting you will be an amazing feeling.

"One of the things I love about Birmingham is it's very diverse. 

"There's many cultures, everyone is just mixing which I love."

With Clarke and other boxers a potential threat to the Commonwealth Games berth, Orie stated that he had to "be consistent, train and recover" to make the England team.

"That’s all that matters to me and everything else should fall in place and get me there ready for the Commonwealth Games," he added.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are set to take place from July 28 to August 8 2022.

England is the most successful nation to date at the Commonwealth Games in boxing, winning 60 gold medals.
