The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has announced the Under-23 Baseball World Cup 2021 will take place from September 23 to October 2 in the Mexican state of Sonora.

The Group A matches and the placement round to determine the seventh to 12th places will be played in Ciudad Obregón, while Hermosillo, Sonora's capital, will host Group B and the Super Round.

Twelve nations will compete in two groups of six, with the top three finishers of each group advancing to the Super Round.

The tournament is supposed to be staged biennially, with the last edition in 2018, but the 2020 competition was postponed due to COVID-19.

Consequently, the WBSC has expanded the age category to include players up to the age of 24, who would have missed out on the event.

Accordingly, players born from 1997 to 2003 will be eligible to participate.

The Under-23 Baseball World Cup was originally the Under-21 Baseball World Cup, although each side was allowed to pick six under-23 players, with the inaugural tournament held in Taiwan in 2014.

From 2016, the event expanded to allow Under-23s to play and was won by Japan in Monterrey in Mexico.

This is the second time that Mexico will host the competition, with Colombia staging it in 2018.

Japan is the most successful team with two silver medals and one gold.

The U-23 Baseball World Cup is the third-most-important international baseball tournament in terms of distribution of world ranking points, following the Premier12 and the World Baseball Classic.

Baseball and softball will feature at Tokyo 2020 for the first time since the 2008 Games, with Israel, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, the United States, and the Dominican Republic all qualifying for the tournament.

The sport will not return for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
