The scheme offers up to €40,000 (£34,313/$47,190) of funding for projects that are successful in their applications.

The call will be made a further three times in 2022 and 2023.

Associations, foundations, local authorities, companies, sports clubs and state structures in Africa are among the bodies eligible to apply, as are French associations and foundations in partnership with a local structure in Africa.

The "Impact 2024 International" call is seeking projects that aim to use sport to improve the lives of vulnerable groups or "areas with fragile contexts" in Africa.

This includes those that focus on improving the lives of girls and young people, as well as those striving for equality and inclusion, the protection of childhood, education and health, environmental protection, and vocational training.

The AFD and Paris 2024 said "Impact 2024 International" fits in with the Organising Committee’s desire to leave a legacy beyond borders, as well as the AFD’s call for projects which has already subsidised 51 projects since 2019.

It also reinforces the AFD and Paris 2024’s stated belief that sport can offer solutions to global social issues, including on health, education, equality, inclusion, solidarity and the environment.

Tony Estanguet, the President of Paris 2024, believes that "Impact 2024 International" will form a key part of the Games’ legacy.

"With three years to go before the Games, this call for projects is a symbol of our ambition to build the legacy of the Paris 2024 Games beyond French territory, alongside the AFD," said Estanguet.

"During this difficult economic and social context for the whole of Africa, we wish more than ever to mobilise the associative and sporting actors who use sport as a driver of resilience, solidarity and development for vulnerable populations.

"Up until 2024, and with the four editions of the “Impact 2024 International” call for projects, dozens of actors will be able to contribute shaping and co-constructing the international legacy of Paris 2024."

AFD chief executive officer Rémy Rioux added: "In accordance with the commitment of President Macron, France continues to invest in sport as a development accelerator.

"This is the meaning of the "Impact 2024 International" programme, through which the French Development Agency and Paris 2024 are strengthening their partnership to support sports projects with a high social impact across Africa.

"This initiative, hosted on the Sport en Commun platform that aims to connect the sport ecosystem and the development finance world, is also part of the international legacy of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals."

The deadline for applications for "Impact 2024 International" is September 1 2021, with winners to be announced in December 2021.

"Impact International 2024" follows an agreement between both organisations in February 2020, which aimed for collaboration to support projects in France and around the world seeking to achieve societal changes.

It also leads on from the "incubator" dedicated to athletes with entrepreneurial projects with social and environmental impacts, which was announced in November 2020 and opened in February 2021.

A second edition of this incubator will launch in 2022.
