The Atatürk Olympic Stadium has been named host of the 2023 UEFA Champions League final after the venue in Istanbul missed out on hosting the event in both 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Istanbul was originally awarded the 2020 UEFA Champions League final.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to the European governing body revising the format of the 2020 competition, which had led to a delayed conclusion to the domestic season.

Lisbon was named host of the competition from the quarter-final stage of the event, with Istanbul’s hosting of the final moved to 2021.

UEFA was again forced to move the final away from Turkey, after the Turkish Government imposed tighter COVID-19 measures amid a rise in cases in May.

The final between Chelsea and Manchester City was ultimately moved to Porto, with the former emerging as 1-0 winners to secure their second Champions League title.

UEFA revealed that its decision for Istanbul to host the 2023 final will lead to the initial host Munich staging the event in 2025.

Wembley Stadium in London will remain the host of the 2024 Champions League final.

UEFA has added that a settlement had been agreed with Bilbao and Dublin, after the two cities were withdrawn as hosts of Euro 2020 host cities.

Bilbao was originally scheduled to host a group stage and round of 16 tie, but the matches were moved to Sevilla after the city was unable to host matches with spectators.

Dublin’s matches were shared between Saint Petersburg in Russia and Wembley Stadium in London for the same reason.

UEFA said the settlement with the cities includes the awarding of future club competition finals.

Dublin is due to host the 2024 UEFA Europa League final.

Bilbao has been named as the host of the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in 2024 and the UEFA Europa League final in 2025.
