Elgendy, who was frustrated in his medal ambitions on Tuesday (July 13) when he and partner Eiad El Kashef were beaten to the bronze medal by Hungarians Andras Gall and Bence Viczian in the men's relay, earned 1072 points to advance as top qualifier to Saturday's (July 17) final.

The Egyptian is bound for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and enjoying a fine season, having won a senior bronze medal last month at the UIPM World Championships in Cairo.

Pele Uibel of Germany joined him in the final with 1,068, followed by South Korea’s Lee Min-seo, who scored 1.061, Russia’s Petr Borshchev on 1,059, and Hungary’s Mihaly Koleszar, who scored 1,058.

Ukraine’s Yuriy Kovalchuk and Vladyslav Chekan, winners of the men’s relay event on Tuesday, both moved into the final, as did the Belarus pairing of Uladzislau Nestserau and Maksim Maruk.

Nestserau and Maruk were runners-up in the relay.

In all, 36 athletes qualified for the final.

The women's final is scheduled tomorrow.

The mixed relay final is due to be the last event of the Junior World Championships on Sunday (July 18).
