Michael Johnson has been selected by New Zealand to represent his country for the fifth time in shooting at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

A gold medallist from Athens 2004, the 47-year-old is set for his fifth consecutive Games after his spot was confirmed at the ParaFed Auckland Shooting Range today by Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ).

He is the sole member of the New Zealand shooting squad.

Johnson is set to become only the third New Zealand Paralympian to compete at five Games, alongside fellow shooting sport athlete Colin Willis who competed from New York and Stoke Mandeville 1984 to Athens 2004.

If he goes on to compete at Paris 2024, he will be tied for the record number of appearances at the Paralympics - joining athletics' Graham Condon who represented New Zealand from Tel Aviv 1968 to Seoul 1988.

"I am so happy to have been officially selected today to the New Zealand Paralympic team," said Johnson.

"Competing at a Paralympic Games is an amazing experience, and to be part of the team and represent my country at my fifth Paralympics makes it even more special."

Johnson was injured in a motor accident at 22 and later tried shooting from 2001 at the Ardmore National Shooting Complex.

Within a year, he was competing internationally.

Johnson added to his Athens 2004 gold with back-to-back bronze medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, but failed to win a medal at Rio 2016.

"It is fantastic to announce Mike Johnson as being selected to represent New Zealand at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games today," Fiona Allan, chief executive of PNZ, said.

"By competing at his fifth Paralympic Games in Tokyo Mike's outstanding achievement has to date only been equalled by Colin Willis and bettered by one Games with Graham Condon having competed at a staggering six Paralympic Games.

"Mike will continue to build on the legacy of previous Paralympians that have competed in the New Zealand Paralympic team in shooting Para-sport."

The Paralympics in the Japanese capital is scheduled to take place from August 24 to September 5.
