The National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF) has announced the country’s official song for the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo.

A song, entitled We all come from somewhere and written by Danish rock band Carpark North, has been chosen by the DIF to inspire the nation’s athletes at Tokyo 2020.

The soundtrack was created in collaboration between Carpark North, DR Girls' Choir and the Danish Sports Confederation and was released last week by Copenhagen Records.

More than 100 athletes are expected to represent Denmark at the delayed Olympics scheduled to open on July 23 against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.

The DIF said the song was about "dreaming big, fighting and reaching the top - only to eventually return home again".

Lau Højen from Carpark North is hopeful athletes and fans will welcome Denmark’s new Olympic soundtrack.

"The song is a story that we reach our dreams on the shoulders of all those who have shaped us: teachers, coaches, friends and family," said Højen.

"When we wrote the song, we imagined the touching images of Sara Sloth and Pernille Blume as they crossed the finish line on land and in the water at the last Olympics.

"Personally, I could suddenly see - perhaps because I myself am now the father of two little girls - the struggle they must have gone through to stand right there.

"Human and ultra-focused beauty.

"I imagine the athletes standing in Japan, hearing the song, and feeling their homeland and all those who got them to this point.

"And then I dream that a thread is spun between us the spectators and the athletes."

Anne Karine Prip, artistic director for DR Girls’ Choir, described the song as a "really strong and inspiring collaboration".

She added: "During a period where both sport and culture have been strongly challenged by the many challenges of the corona pandemic, it has been incredibly meaningful for us in the choir to find together with players from both the world of sport and music about a project that pays tribute to the community and our common roots.

"These are values that are already absolutely central to the DR Girls' Choir."

Søren Simonsen, Denmark’s Chef de Mission for Tokyo 2020, said it was a "wildly cool song" and hoped it would be a soundtrack for a successful Games.

"The theme of the song revolves around the strong roots of association and family life and the fact that no athlete reaches the top alone," added Simonsen.

"We all come from somewhere' is therefore very much a tribute to our hinterland, the Danish sports associations and the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who shape our fantastic athletes from the early start in the clubs to the ultimate goal - the Olympic participation."
